Should I pivot?

Should I Pivot? Questions to ask yourself when life seems overwhelming

December 30, 20242 min read

How do you know if it’s time to pivot your entire life, business or career after a life-changing event? ( I've done this over 10 times)

Let’s talk about those moments when life hits you with the unexpected—the ones that shake up everything you thought you knew about your career, your business, or even your long-term goals.

Maybe it’s a health issue, a family crisis, or a shift in priorities that you didn’t see coming. Whatever it is, it has you sitting there wondering: “Is the path I’m on still right for me?”

If you’re a high achiever (and I know you are), that question can feel terrifying. You’ve spent years building something meaningful—your career, your business, or even your reputation as someone who gets things done.
When life forces us to pause and reassess, it’s not a sign that we’re falling behind. It’s an opportunity to realign—to make sure that the path we’re on aligns with who we are now and where we want to go next.

Here are three questions I want you to ask yourself:

1️⃣ Does what I’m doing still align with who I am NOW?
Life changes us, often in ways we don’t expect. The goals you set five years ago—or even six months ago—might not fit the person you’ve become. Take a moment to reflect. Do your current projects, responsibilities, or business reflect your values, priorities, and the version of yourself that exists today?

Sometimes, the discomfort we feel isn’t because we’ve failed—it’s because we’ve outgrown something. And that’s okay.

2️⃣ Is my current path sustainable with my new reality?
High achievers are known for pushing through, even when the odds aren’t in their favor.

Ask yourself: Does the way you’re working right now support your physical health, mental well-being, and overall quality of life? If life has thrown you a curveball—whether it’s a health challenge, a shift in responsibilities, or new priorities—you may need to adjust your approach to create something that works with your reality, not against it.

Burnout isn’t a badge of honor, and sustainability should never be an afterthought.

3️⃣ What would success look like for me if I gave myself permission to pivot?
This is a big one. So often, we stick to a path because we think success has to look a certain way. But what if you permitted yourself to rewrite the definition of success?

What if success wasn’t about sticking to the original plan at all costs? What if it was about building a life or career that feels fulfilling, aligned, and sustainable?

A pivot doesn’t mean starting over. It means taking all the skills, experience, and lessons you’ve collected along the way and using them to build something even better...and more importantly, knowing that this could be an amazing opportunity, not a failure.
